Chapter 8

“WHERE is he?”

The sight that greeted Matt in the wee hours of his day off, while he stood in the doorway of his loft wearing nothing but his black boxers and a white T-shirt, still scratching sleep dust from his half-lidded eyes, was anything but welcoming. The woman in her late forties or early fifties was beautiful—and must’ve been more so in her heyday. Tall and slender, she had an air about her, commanding yet sophisticated. Dressed in a simple but elegant businesslike suit with a tight prune-colored jacket, a white blouse underneath, and slim trousers—and black high heels too—she was the very picture of a well-bred and cultivated upper-class matriarch. Everything about her screamed generations of affluence and high-tier connections.

Green eyes flashed at him, almost fuming, checking him out from head to toe in a less than friendly manner. “Did you not hear me, young man? I asked, where is he?” Her voice was not quite shrill but definitely not low either. What it absolutely was, was standoffish and chilly.

“Uh….” Matt brushed the hair off of his forehead, as if that move would suddenly clear his head from the drowsiness. “Um, who are you again…?”

She took a deep breath, obviously unaccustomed to such blatant inquiries. However, she didn’t have an opportunity to answer before a miffed voice behind Matt spoke quietly. “What are you doing here?”

Turning around, stunned, Matt saw Rain standing there in his long flowery pajama bottoms, barefoot and bare-chested. It had been a week and a half since he’d been released from the hospital to Matt’s care, and his pale skin tone looked better, healthier. His leg, however, had yet to show noticeable signs of improvement. His voice was still hoarse and became a raspy whisper if he spoke too long, so his singing days were still far off.

Right now, Rain’s face held fury and frustration as he scowled at the lady at the door.

“Now, now, dear,” the woman rebuked him, patient and calm as you please. “Is that any way to address your only mother? And I do believe the good Dr. Redding warned you to watch your blood pressure, so mind your tongue and see about those manners of yours.”

Numb and dumbfounded, Matt watched silently in awe as the lady simply sidestepped him and entered the apartment proper.

Rain, however, was neither amused nor stunned, his lips forming a stern line. “You can’t just barge in here willy-nilly like you own the place, Momsy. It’s Matt’s home. Have you no manners?”

The middle-aged lady stopped in midstep, blinked as if confused, and spun around to face Matt. Her expression was a bit befuddled, and her cheeks reddened, but the smile on her face seemed genuine enough. “Oh, I do apologize. I fear whenever my son’s health and safety are concerned, I tend to lose my composure, not to mention every last trace of my civility. Can you ever forgive me?” Though her words were somewhat exaggerated, her countenance suggested she was sincere—and she was embarrassed that her son had scolded her in public.
